Did fast growing enterprises (gazelles) of Central and Eastern Europe participate in FP7 projects?

In the framework of the FP7 MIRRIS project (http://www.mirris.eu) EURADA looked into the DG Research databases on EU13 SME participation in FP7 and compared these data with Deloitte's top 50 of fast growing SMEs.

Written by Michela Bugiolacchio and Tessa Anné

According to DG Research databases of SMEs involved in FP7 collaborative research projects, 1028 SMEs from EU13 countries have got a grant from the EU.

It is obvious – as shown in the little table below – that SMEs from some Member States are doing better than those of other Member States both in absolute terms (due to the size of the country, Poland is doing better than Latvia or Malta, for instance) and in relative terms (stock of enterprises in the country – Maltese and Hungarian enterprises seem to do better than Romanian or Bulgarian ones). The data below provides an overview of the number of EU13 SMEs having participated in FP7 thematic projects.

Since 10 years, the consulting firm Deloitte has been publishing each year a ranking of the top 50 fast growing enterprises of Central and Eastern Europe operating mainly in the ICT sector. This ranking as well shows differences between EU13 countries. Some have a fairly good participation of fast growing SMEs while others don't. Between the years 2006 and 2013, 214 different enterprises were recorded in that ranking. The split between EU13 countries is shown in the table 2 hereafter:

Mixing the two databases provides the interesting result that only 9 fast growing enterprises had access to EU funding, 4 of them participated in at least 2 projects. The names of those 9 enterprises are:

They are located in only 4 Member States and 4 of them are from Hungary. This means that a potential reservoir of 205 enterprises is to be exploited by EU13 countries in order to increase the number of SMEs participating in H2020 compared to FP7.
